Self-Esteem

Self-Esteem

Low self-esteem is the negative evaluation of oneself and a lack of confidence in one’s abilities or value. It is normal for everyone’s self-esteem to fluctuate depending on circumstances, roles, and life events, but good self-esteem is important for leading a happy and fulfilling life.

Low self-esteem can be impacted by adverse life experiences and is maintained by internalized self-critical thoughts.. Our self-esteem is generally developed throughout childhood and teen years and depends on how we are treated by others, especially those in charge of us – parents, family members, teachers, etc. In adolescence, bullying and rejection by peers has a huge impact as we are developing our sense of self in relation to others, at a tender time of development. Abusive relationships and stressful life events in adult life can also trigger low self-esteem.
